How to get heatless curls overnight (step by step)

Heatless curls are exactly what they sound like: curls you set without a curling iron, straightener or hot brush. You wrap your hair around a soft rod before bed and unwrap it in the morning. No heat, no waiting in front of the mirror.
What you need
- A heatless curling rod, such as the Ordeno Overnight Curl
- Two scrunchies or clips to secure the ends
- A brush or wide-tooth comb
- Optional: a smooth pillowcase, such as the Ordeno Satin Sleep
Step by step
- Start with dry or slightly damp hair. Very wet hair often will not dry overnight, so the curls do not set.
- Brush out any knots. Smooth hair wraps more evenly.
- Place the middle of the rod on top of your head, so both ends hang down beside your face.
- Take a small section of hair at the front and wrap it around the rod, away from your face. Add a little more hair with each twist, a bit like a French braid.
- Repeat on the other side and secure both ends with a scrunchie or clip.
- Sleep on it, or leave it in for a few hours during the day.
- In the morning, remove the scrunchies, unwrap the hair gently and loosen the curls with your fingers.
Tips for curls that last
- Smaller sections give tighter curls, bigger sections give looser waves.
- Do not brush the curls hard straight away. Use your fingers first, then a brush if you want softer waves.
- A satin pillowcase has a smoother surface than cotton, so there is less rubbing while you sleep.
Which hair works best?
Heatless curls work best on medium to long hair. On very short hair there is not enough length to wrap around the rod. Fine hair often curls quickly; thick hair may need a little longer or slightly smaller sections.
