What is microcurrent? How face sculpting at home works

Microcurrent is one of the most popular beauty trends right now. A salon treatment can be pricey, but these days you can also do it at home. What exactly is it, how does it work and who is it suitable for? We explain it simply.

What is microcurrent?

Microcurrent is a very gentle, low electrical current. It is so light that you barely feel it, if at all. A microcurrent device usually has two metal spheres or plates that you glide over your skin. Together with a conductive gel, this gives your face a gentle massage.

Beauty salons have used microcurrent for years as part of facial treatments. It is often called a "facial workout": a kind of mini training session for your face.

What will you notice?

Many users find that their skin looks fresher and more awake after a session, and that their face feels firmer. The effect is most noticeable straight after use. It works best when you do it regularly, just like exercise: a few minutes every day works better than one long session now and then.

To be honest: microcurrent is not a replacement for medical or cosmetic procedures, and everyone experiences it differently. Think of it as a pleasant care ritual that gives your skin a fresh boost.

How to use a microcurrent device

  1. Start with clean skin. Wash your face and pat it dry.
  2. Apply a thin layer of conductive gel. Without gel the current cannot reach your skin properly. Pure, alcohol-free aloe vera gel works well too.
  3. Glide slowly upwards and outwards. Start at your jawline and work towards your ears, then over your cheeks and forehead.
  4. Keep it short. About 5 minutes per session is enough.
  5. Clean your skin afterwards and apply your usual skincare.

Who should not use microcurrent?

Do not use microcurrent if you:

  • have a pacemaker or any other electronic implant;
  • are pregnant;
  • have epilepsy;
  • have metal implants in your face;
  • have an open wound, inflammation or skin condition in the area you want to treat.

Not sure? Check with your GP first.
